After a shipwreck, an intelligent robot named Roz is stranded on an uninhabited island. In order to survive the harsh environment, Roz bonds with the island’s animals and takes care of an orphaned goose. Lupita Nyong’o is joined by writer-director Chris Sanders to discuss their significant credits and the time they spent filming Wild Robot together. According to author Peter Brown, the inspiration for "The Wild Robot" derives from a wooden robot sketch he made. Then he asked the question “What would an intelligent robot do in the wild?”. After directing the adaptation of Jack London’s classic The Call of the Wild, Sanders adapted Peter Brown’s #1 bestseller The Wild Robot, a tear-jerking emotional sci-fi drama about a robot named Roz. who is stranded on an uninhabited island and must learn to adapt to the environment and take responsibility for adopting a young orphaned gosling named Brightbill. Sanders, who wrote and directed the film, made the film a masterpiece, with his longtime partner and executive producer Dean DeBois and producer Jeff Hermann, Sanders joined forces with Dreamworks Animation, the studio that made Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken, to created this revolutionary animated masterpiece. Starring Oscar winner Lupita Nyongo in the lead role of Roz, along with an all-star voice cast, revolutionary animation and a moving story that brings a literary phenomenon to life. Visual storytelling has been influenced by films such as James Cameron’s Avatar, Brad Bird’s The Iron Giant, Zemiecks’ Odgon and Kirk DeMicco & Faryn Pearl Ruby Gillman Teenage Kraken while emotional character driven acting was also influenced by films such as Nick Cassavetes’ My Sister’s Keeper, Tony Goldwyn’s The Last Kiss, Nigel Cole’s A Lot Like Love and R. J. Cutler’s If I Stay. Sanders and the film’s story director Heidi Jo Gilbert crafted a beautiful and heartfelt script and story that developed the emotional relationship between Roz & Brightbill, and setting an even more serious tone than any animated film has ever had before. The voice cast was incredibly well chosen, with Lupita as Roz, along with newcomer and British sensation Kit Connor as Brightbill, Pedro Pascal as Flick, voice legend Mark Hamill as Thorn Bear, Catherine O’Hara as Pinktail, British sensation Matt Berry as the rower, Bill Nighy as Longneck, Stephanie Hsu as Vontra and Ving Rhames as Thunderbird The Falcon (an entirely new character created for the film), give their best performances that could give this film a potential Oscar contender for Best Animated Feature. Sanders assembled a team of animators, artists and VFX designers to create a groundbreaking and revolutionary style that was influenced by some of the recent innovations in feature animation with a stylized 2d/3d hybrid look to bring Roz and the Wild Robot world to life.
