A family is invited to spend an entire weekend in an isolated house in the countryside, but as the weekend progresses, they realize that there is a dark side to the family that invited them. James McAvoy and Mackenzie Davis share the elements of their characters that they found most intriguing and complement each other as they discuss their different approaches to the craft. The story is inspired by the experiences of Christian Tafdrup, the director of the Danish original Speak No Evil (2022), who befriended a Dutch couple while on holiday in Tuscany with his wife. Although the Dutch were a little socially awkward, both couples got along very well, and after returning home, Tafdrup received an invitation from the Dutch family to move to Holland. He thought about it briefly, but decided it would be weird to be around people he didn’t really know; His story for the film came about when he unleashed his darkest fantasies about what might happen if they agreed (whereas the original Dutch couple never gave off bad vibes). In this remake, the nationalities of the two families were changed to American and British. In the bathroom, while washing his eyes, he has a subconjunctival hemorrhage in his left eye, in the next scene his eyes are perfectly clear. Ben Dalton: Why are you doing this to us? The first act: the setting is masterful. Nothing of note happens in the entire act, but I found myself smiling and intrigued. It’s a perfect example of how you can build plot without needing action, or worse, without having an opening scene that ruins what happens later in the second film: Ok, now missing something important becomes damaged. We should see an escalation, but it seems like more setup. Act Three: Escalation finally comes, but not quite. The potential doesn’t reach the heights to make it memorable. And there are some idiotic character decisions. One almost made me face off at the movies As for Scoot McNairy’s husband, I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a more missed husband in my life. I know it was intentional and it didn’t hurt my enjoyment, but all I kept thinking was, “Be a man, little one…” Overall, this was a moderately enjoyable, unique movie. The reason I feel disappointed is that it could have been great if they “tried” more. But McAvoy is a beast. (1 viewing, opening night 12.09.2024).
